Next phase of IP grants for 2023

The European Commission is relaunching the popular SME Ideas Powered for Business Fund programme run by the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

The Fund can significantly simplify the path for obtaining protection for your brand, giving you an irreplaceable advantage over your competitors. At the same time, by ensuring the protection of your intellectual property, you can significantly increase the value of your business.

Who can apply for a grant?

The grants are intended for so-called SME - small and medium-sized enterprises. According to the European Union, such enterprises include those with fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover of less than €50 million (alternatively, with an annual balance sheet total of less than €43 million).

What services are eligible for the grants?

The following types of vouchers have been introduced for this year:

  1. A voucher for up to €1,000:

EU and national trademarks and industrial designs

    • Reimbursement of 75% of the cost of the basic fee International trademarks and designs
    • Reimbursement of 50% of the cost of the basic fee
  2. Voucher for €810:

Preliminary diagnosis in the field of intellectual property (IP Scan1)

    • Reimbursement of 90% of the costs

The grant can thus save you (when applying for a national trademark for three classes of goods or services) €3,750, and €637.5 when registering a European Union trademark.

To apply for the grant, you will need:

  1. your company’s bank account statement
  2. VAT certificate or a certificate of your company’s national registration number
  3. affidavit stating that you are an SME

If your application is approved, EUIPO will send you the relevant voucher. You can then file a trademark application or apply for other IP services as required. Once you have paid the fees for these services, you will apply for reimbursement on the basis of the voucher you received earlier.

Time limit to apply for the grant

You can apply for funding up until 8 December 2023. However, the funds allocated to the fund are limited, so we recommend that you do not hesitate to apply.
